Mentoring Ministry

Mission Statement

We, the members of the Mentoring Ministry, at the First Baptist Church of Merrifield, where Rev. Martin Pickett is pastor, feel honored and blessed to be able to give back to the community; especially to our youth at the Luther Jackson Middle School (LJMS) of Fairfax County. As such, we are committed to providing recognizable service and to being good role models for the LJMS students. We pledge to follow the guidelines established between the Fairfax County Government and Faith Community Youth Partnership Programs.

Our mission is to provide a safe atmosphere to encourage, motivate, and be a presence in the lives of young people. We will offer guidance and assistance in their educational and personal development. We will build their confidence by coaching, teaching them skills, and enabling them to advocate for themselves. We strive to promote better citizenship, through our words, actions and deeds.

Techniques used to accomplish goals:

    • Current event and classroom objectivity lessons
    • Mediation techniques and team building exercises
    • Educational, cognitive, and deductive reasoning sessions
    • Discussions and guest speakers (Bullying, Gangs, Dangers of the Internet)
    • Providing Community service opportunities
    • Participating in cultural events and educational outings
    • Off and on campus sports activities
    • Awareness sessions (self, peers, community, etc.)
    • Refusal Skills
Mentoring Ministry Overview

The Mentoring ministry was started about 8 years ago by Mr. Albert Van Graves and Mrs. Shelia Graves, in conjunction with Pastor Keith Kitchen and Principal Carolyn Robinson, of Luther Jackson Middle School. It started as a joint effort between the church and the school, to increase the academic scores of the African American student population. This faith based partnership was one of the first in Fairfax County, is well known, and often looked to as a model of how to form a partnership between the faith community and the local schools. We follow the focus of the school; this year being Citzenry (respect, responsibility and honesty), and aim to improve the social and academic skills of our mentees.

I, Gary Greene, have been involved with the ministry from the beginning, and the Director of the ministry for the last 5 years. Deacon William Bacon is the liason between the Pastor and the youth oriented ministries. We have had many dedicated mentors through the years, who have been positive role models to the children in the greater community of FBCM. Last year's staff included Aramintia Harris, William Young, Deborah Williams, and Uhland Arch. We have also had guest speakers, such as Anita Murphy and Sandra Chisolm of the Fairfax County Interfaith liaison. This year's staff, so far, will be William Young, Deborah Williams, Barbara Grayson, Anita Murphy, Kiralfy Forte and I. We are still in the process of seeking mentors as noted in the church bulletin.

We've had our first meeting on Sept. 15th and decided that we will visit the Illif Nursing Home and feed the homeless with FBCM as community service events. The students will get credit for these events. Every year, as noted in the attached mission statement, we will involve the children culturally, socially and educationally.

Dates and schedules of activities will be forthcoming as they develop and according to the school schedules. We will submit periodic reports to Deacon Bacon, place articles in the church newsletter and the bulletin, to let the Pastor and church know how we are progressing throughout the year.
